Workshop 7 – RIECS-Concept: Technological Challenges for a European Citizen Science Infrastructure

📌 On 18 November 2025, 12:45-13:45 (CET), during the Barcelona Citizen Science Conference, the RIECS-Concept project will host a collaborative workshop dedicated to addressing the technological challenges of building a pan-European infrastructure for citizen science.
✅ This 60-minute session, titled “RIECS-Concept: Technological Challenges for a European Citizen Science Infrastructure”, will take place at Sala Ramón y Cajal, Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB). It is organised by the EMBIMOS research group (ICM–CSIC) together with Ibercivis, under the umbrella of the RIECS-Concept project.
✅ The organisers and contributors are Ana Àlvarez, Meritxell Turó, Jaume Piera, and Karen Soacha-Godoy – EMBIMOS Research Group, ICM-CSIC (Work Package 2 Lead) and Fermín Serrano – Ibercivis, RIECS-Concept Project Coordinator.

A Collaborative Effort for Europe’s Citizen Science Future
📌 The workshop aims to bring together key actors from the European citizen science ecosystem – from managers of digital infrastructures and data users to representatives of citizen initiatives and research organisations.
📌 Using participatory methodologies, participants will explore and prioritise the most pressing technological challenges for a European citizen science infrastructure that is:
✳️ Open and inclusive.
✳️ Sustainable.
✳️ Aligned with open science principles.
The session will also serve as a co-creation space to validate preliminary findings from the RIECS-Concept project and collaboratively define a roadmap for future development. This roadmap will guide the next phases of designing a robust, interoperable, and equitable infrastructure for citizen science across Europe.

Why It Matters
Citizen science is transforming the way research is conducted and shared, bridging the gap between scientists and society. Yet, achieving this vision on a European scale requires coordinated digital infrastructures, data interoperability, and sustainable collaboration models.
✨ Through this workshop, RIECS-Concept seeks to shape the technological backbone that will enable researchers, citizens, and institutions to collaborate seamlessly, reinforcing Europe’s leadership in open and participatory science ✨
On 17th November, 15:50–16:20 | Bloc D: microxerrades – 8 minutes, we will also be sharing two talks that are part of the RIECS context:
✳️ RIECS-Concept: Towards an Open Infrastructure for European Citizen Science (Jaume Piera)
✳️ Citizen Observatories: Research Infrastructures for Action (Karen Soacha)
